First Day of School Recap

(download)
Royalmont's new school year got off to an awesome start yesterday. We started the school day as we typically do, with Morning Assembly, during which we consecrated the new school year to Jesus and Mary. A little later we gathered for an all-school Mass celebrated by Fr. Matthew Van Smoorenburg. Students spent the rest of the day with their homeroom class reviewing the upcoming school year, going over a few classroom rules, and getting to know their new teachers.

This morning, Mr. Schlotman's 5th grade class shared a poem at Morning Assembly called "Hymn" by Jars of Clay, a Christian band. They recited the whole poem as a group and then again in solo parts.

Thank you, 5th grade, for sharing this beautiful poem during the month of the Sacred Heart.

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

It's our first day back from Easter Break and this morning Mrs. K's PreK 4 class celebrated Easter together by making one of our students' all-time favorite desserts: Resurrection Rolls!

These delicious desserts are a great lesson on the Resurrection. The marshmallow in the middle melts during baking to create an "empty tomb" reminding us of the great miracle and mystery we celebrate on Easter.

Happy Easter from Royalmont Academy!

Teaching Boys to read the Bible

Once a week, after school, several Dads run a boy's club called ConQuest.  The whole purpose of the club is to teach boys how to grow in virtue.  But we like to inject the club meetings with sports and fun, so that the boys associate "fun" with "faith formation."

This past week, the older boys' lesson was designed to teach theboys HOW and WHY to read the Bible.

We used a dictionary as an example- in order to make the point more clear.

We identified several things we use a dictionary for, and then we tried to identify several things we can use the Bible for.

Then we asked the boys how the Dictionary was arranged.  That's easy!  Everyone knows the answer: it's arranged alphabetically!

Now comes the harder question- how is te Bible arranged?  In other words- what is the key to understanding the Bible?

We are not asking, "what order is it in," or "how is it divided," but "what is the KEY to understanding the Bible?"

Royalmont Boys Retreat

This morning 27 boys in Royalmont's 6th, 7th, & 8th grades left for a two-day retreat at Sacred Heart Apostolic School. A few 4th & 5th grade siblings also jumped on board for the adventure. Fr. Gregory and Br. John have an exciting two days planned for them including some fierce sports competitions, crazy games, and, of course, Mass, confession, and virtue talks aimed at deepening their faith and helping them encounter Christ this Lent.

Royalmont meets a Chinese priest

Father_bonaventure

Here's a note from our principal.

A few weeks ago, I was honored to meet a priest named Fr. Bonaventure, a Franciscan originally from China who is currently working in several areas, primarily as a chaplain at several Cincinnati hospitals. In his time in China, Father Bonaventure was harassed, jailed, tortured, and eventually had to leave the country. As a young priest who was attracting an ever-growing group of the faithful, both he and his family were persecuted. I was overwhelmed at hearing his story. Before his departure in China, he was even offered the position of Bishop in the "Patriotic church." He turned it down and was further persecuted.

Father Bonaventure was recently given an award from Harvard and, I believe, might be being considered as an Auxiliary Bishop to minister to Chinese Chinese Catholics. To my delight, Father Bonaventure has joyfully agreed to celebrate Mass at Royalmont this Friday, March 18 at 2:00 PM. He has also agreed to spend a little time with our Upper School students telling them a little about his time of persecution in China.

We are hoping that as many families as possible will be able to attend Mass this Friday and welcome Father Bonaventure. This is a great honor and opportunity for our school and a great way to kick off our Gala weekend.
